Job Description
The Environmental and Social Safeguards Specialist will be responsible for assessing, managing, and monitoring environmental and social risks and impacts of development projects.
Qualification
BA or MA Degree in Environmental Studies, Sociology, Economics, Development Studies, or related fields
Required Work Experience
Minimum 10 years of progressively responsible experience for BA degree holders
Minimum 5 years of relevant experience for MA degree holders
Experience in government institutions, major companies, or NGOs
At least 5 years of experience in social and environmental standards and impact assessment
Proven experience in developing and implementing safeguard standards in development projects
Track record in assessing, managing, and monitoring project-level environmental and social risks
Experience implementing safeguards policies, guidelines, and frameworks in large-scale development projects
Prior experience in World Bank–funded projects is an advantage
Experience working with NGOs, private sector, international organizations, development partners, and government institutions
Experience in emergency projects is an added advantage
Required Skills & Competencies
Strong technical background in environmental and social safeguards
Familiarity with the World Bank Environmental and Social Framework (ESF)
Demonstrated knowledge of cultural heritage, including chance find procedures
Strong partnership skills and ability to work independently with limited supervision
Ability to plan, prioritize, coordinate, and monitor work plans
Strong oral and written communication skills, including report writing and presentations
Excellent communication skills, especially in presenting analysis results to management
Proficiency in computerized systems, spreadsheets, and databases
Language Requirements
Excellent command of English
Fluency in Amharic and Afaan Oromo
